About
the book:
Xavier
Audouard debuted in moto-journalism in 1979 at age 22, after his
own racing career in France - his native country - was plagued with
injuries. He
has remained the Motocross and Supercross specialist at Moto Revue,
Moto Verte and MX Magazines since, attending hundreds of races,
half of them in America.
In
1984, Audouard was instrumental in the creation of the Paris-Bercy
Supercross by the Lariviere press group. Bercy has remained the
most important event in Europe since. A
militant of international racing, he has also helped bring French
riders Jean-Michel Bayle, Michael Pichon and Stephane Roncada to
America.
Between
his expertise and the excellence of the photographic archives from
Editions Lariviere Group, this book is the first to explore the
extensive and in-depth history of the most exciting motorsport in
Earth, Supercross.
For
their "light" editing and editorial suggestions for this
work, the author is highly grateful to two reputed American moto-journalists,
Paul Boudreau and Ken Faught. And for his contribution to early
photos and documentation research, to Dick Miller as well.
Paul
"Baz" Boudreau, who was part of the editorial team that
founded Motocross Action Magazine in 1972 and who, along with Rick
"Super Hunky" Sieman and Dick Miller, led the "Golden
Age" of moto-journalism in the 1970's. Paul is currently a
contributor and monthly columnist for Racer X Illustrated. Part
of the enduring folklore of the sport is that, back in the beginning,
"The Baz" coined the term "Supercross."
Ken
Faught was the man behind Dirt Rider Magazine, the largest off-road
publication in the world, holding the position of Editor-in-Chief
for many years until recently choosing to pursue a freelance career.
Ken has always been one of the most informed insiders within the
Motocross community and one of its best photographers as well.
This
book also features exclusive photos from the Dick Miller Collection.
Dick was "the' original US MX reporter. As the Editor of MXA,
he had great influence on the young sports of motocross and supercross
in America.
BOOK
PREFACE
by Jeremy McGrath:
Supercross
was not a job or a career to me. It was a lifestyle, my life's passion.
For fifteen years, I dedicated almost ten months a season to training,
preparing, traveling and racing across the country and the world.
Racing Supercross has not only changed my life, it has defined it!
I can't thank my dad Jack enough for teaching me how to ride my
first dirt bike when I was five.
This
sport has taught me that you need heart, will power, and dedication,
and you have to learn to sacrifice in order to succeed. The life
lessons and experiences I've had are ones that I am going to carry
throughout the rest of my life, and I wouldn't trade them for the
world. It has also given me the chance to work with incredibly talented
individuals and meet many great people. This is the greatest sport
in the world!
In
return I always tried to be a good representative, give it all for
the win and respect everyone involved. People tell me that I have
been a good role model for kids, helped getting more mainstream
attention to all this, or created better opportunities for fellow
racers. If that is true, even in a small way, I am very proud of
it.
My
autobiography tells my side of the story but Xavier Audouard's project,
"The Great History of Supercross", embraces our sport
as a whole for the very first time. I have seen him at the pro races
for as long as I can remember. As a reporter he definitely knew
what was going on.
He
was also the Paris Supercross representative from the beginning.
I have raced Bercy ten times and had some of my most memorable racing
moments there. Xavier always goes out of his way to make things
smooth and exciting for us American riders in Paris! He is a genuine
enthusiast and will remain my personal friend for many years to
come.
